Hi All, I'm new to watermelon growing, so I may have done something wrong with my seeds. I have tried 3 times to start these seeds in seed starting soil and nothing came up from two 2025 packets from Menards. The fourth attempt, I tried and they sprouted, but a chipmunk dug up my seeds and left me with nothing but roots. If anyone has some watermelon seeds to share, I would so appreciate. I'm thinking of putting welded wire on the soil and around the site maybe 1/4". Any other ideas would be so helpful. I'm trying to work with young kids this summer to learn gardening in my neighborhood. We're oping to successfully grow this watermelon plant. Thanks in advance for your help!! Julie

Sounds like your sprouting is going OK but the after-the-fact protection is ailing. Seed-Starting Mix for Seed Starting is specifically needed. I recommend Jiffy Natural and Organic. Get a few 1-gallon Rubbermaid lemonade/beverage jugs at Wal-Mart and ALONG WITH a 16-ounce clear plastic cup over each pair, put one jug over every two seeds you plant, with a ROCK or brick on each apparatus. *NO seed needs to be 'one inch deep' if yer trying really hard to sprout it. I can always still see the rounded end as I bid them 'Good Luck'.* This will create a little terrarium (else they WILL dry out, even in the jug alone!) and protect them until you put a ClothesBasket over each 1 or 2 seedlings with the same ROCK to protect them in the interim until you put in your Super Fence. Yeah, 1/4" fence sounds appropriate, although I have never fenced any plants in. Too cheap, lol. Once the seeds sprout, remove the cup(s) at least and when they are hitting the sides of the jugs, then CBs, good to go to remove each, AT these times. I did all this on my FPs this year and even more elaborately (the cups) and EVERY (30) seed sprouted and is/are going strong as ever - Some got slugged (2-3, ones I had under 5-gallon buckets) and yet, now, I can't keep up with weeds and watering, but they are ALL doing great. NOT WMs, but these tactics will add to your possibilities.
NOT an Expert and I wish you well. eric g PS---You could repost your request in the Watermelon Growing Forum for greater coverage and expert WM advice. eg
