After testing my irrigation system, I covered the patch in heavy duty white weed fabric. I am hoping this will have the following benefits:
- No weeds
- Separation between the soil and vine preventing vine rot.
- Cooler soil temps once the heat comes (Central CT gets strangely hot in the summer due to some microclimate magic, hence why we used to grow tobacco this far north.
- More photosynthesis on the bottoms of the leaves?
- Making the top 2" of the soil more hospitable for roots instead of being hot and dry.
There are many things that could go wrong with this strategy but hey, If the alternative is my plant shutting down in August due to vine rot I have nothing to lose.
