Both seeds started at the same time. The Big Marley on the right was planted in regular seed starting soil. Nice and loose, but I ran out of this soil and had to use some old potting soil because I didn't want to run into town to get more. The 6.06 Spaziani on the left was planted in the old potting soil. It was more compact. You can see the difference in the two! The 30 I transplanted in the seed starting soil were big. The 10 I transplanted in old potting soil were stunted. Needless to say they didn't make it to the garden. Transplant this thinking to your garden. Do what it takes early to make sure your soil is nice and loose. Use a shovel if you have to if you don't have a tiller. The extra work will pay off.
