Yesterday I returned to the patch armed with a sharp knife and the yellow sulphur! I gave the stem on the 1395 a good scrape around it's small soft spot...which was maybe a cm across...and then dusted liberally with the sulphur. Dusted the other pumpkin's stem too as conditions are now getting quite grey and dank down at my allotment! I also spread a LOT of slug pellets around as well!
