Happy New Year and good growing in 2025. Sample of my Onions today, LH one is growing in Coir with 9th leaf just showing, RH is in Lev. M3 compost/Ecolife with 8th leaf. Not as far on as last year but happy with progress.

Onions are growing steadily, LH one in coir and stronger than the soil one which is still in a 9 inch pot. generally they have 13th/14th leaf just showing. Do not think I will be planting out for at least 2/3 weeks.

Planted out 7 onions into my homemade frame after insulating/draught stripping to try and hold the heat in, cold/grey but due to warm up this week, (we have not seen the sun this month so far)

After a week of 4c temp's overnight it has changed to 14c today, planted out 6 more Onions, 5 in Gareth Hopcroft's mixes and 1 in Terra. CDM lights over on 11.25 hours during the day - day length beginning to increase quickly now.

Early planted Onions have established well in this frame despite cold nights, insulating the north wall and providing a fleece ceiling over at night has helped keep down the heating costs.

We now have hot sunny days but frosts at night, difficult conditions for veg. plants in pots inside. Planted out the Swede, 2 in 130 litre pots inside my enclosed frame and 2 into the ground in the netted tunnel covered by large cloches.

First issue with the onions, today I found one with trapped leaves in the neck, it may grow out. Last year I was having problems with double bulbs but all ok so far.

Found Botrytis on a good onion bulb, stripped off 5 skins to try and remove the disease.

Last years best Onion still sound and has rooted into its pot, however it is not growing any new shoots - moved it into the warmer greenhouse to try and wake it up.

First Onion head open - looks as if this will be the largest one, trying to hand pollinate as no bees/insects around in the greenhouse now.
